Smart Manufacturing
Robotics Automation for SMEs
Student team developed a robotic arm solution for a Chinese manufacturing partner.
Example project. This describes the shape a CBIC collaboration takes and the work involved. Partner names, figures and dates are omitted rather than estimated — CBIC publishes those only with the partner's agreement.
The challenge
Small manufacturers rarely automate because industrial robotics is priced for large plants. The brief was a pick-and-place cell built from components an SME could actually source and a workshop technician could actually maintain.
How it worked
1The team scoped a single repetitive station rather than a whole production line.
2CBIC introduced them to a manufacturing partner who supplied component guidance and specification review.
3They prototyped with accessible actuators and controllers, deliberately avoiding proprietary parts.
4Safety interlocks and an emergency stop were designed in from the start, not added afterwards.
5Maintenance documentation was written for a technician, not an engineer.
Technologies involved
- Servo and stepper actuation
- Microcontroller motion control
- Computer vision for part alignment
- CAD and 3D-printed fixtures
What the team gained
- A demonstrable cell handling a real repetitive task
- Component sourcing guidance from a partner who buys at volume
- Design review from engineers running production floors
- A costed bill of materials an SME could evaluate
If you are submitting a project
Partners respond to constraints. 'Cheap enough for an SME and maintainable by their own staff' is a sharper brief than 'industrial robotics'.
